MyLot Review

Sunday 28 January 2007 @ 8:16 pm

As some of you might know, one of my sources of income is MyLot.

MyLot is a pay-per-post forum, in which you will get paid for each conversation you start or respond to. The payments depend on the quality of your response, and on how many people respond to anew conversation. The actual algorithm used to calculate earnings is kept secret.

While you will make only a couple of cents per response or a new discussion, the actual community built up on MyLot is lively and interesting, and has a variety of topics, so whatever you feel like chatting about, it will be covered. The interesting conversations mean that regular posting becomes a pleasure, and soon you are making a bit of extra money.

In addition to being paid for each post, MyLot has a refferal program as well, where you can make 20% ofthe earnings of anybody else you sign up.

So, what are you waiting for? Go and sign up!

New Theme

Friday 26 January 2007 @ 1:52 pm

Well, I have switched to a new theme. The main reason for that was that my adsense ads were getting no clickthroughs, so I have decided to try a different theme, this one specifically designed for adsense. So, now I am using the SEO Adsense Wordpress Theme from Plikster. It should preform better in that aspect than my old one (its not like it can perform any worse).
I will monitor it, and see how it does in the meantime.

Sponsored Posts

Thursday 18 January 2007 @ 10:25 am

Well, the more observant among you would have noticed the previous post.

Yes, I have decided to start writing sponsored posts, so far the only network I have signed up with is blogsvertise, although I am looking into a couple of others… I think this blog might be a bit too green around the gills for some of them.

There are a couple of reasons why I have done this:

  1. Money! - Yes, a complete shocker… I actually want to make money on line (if you did not expect this, you have not been paying attention).
  2. Inspiration - Perhaps I should have named this one Content. Sometimes, I struggle to come up with things to write about, and this way, I have other people coming up with stuff for me.

So, what do you guys think about sponsored posts?

The Tyrrany of PayPal

Thursday 11 January 2007 @ 12:03 pm

I have just tried to sign on for an online advertising service, which shall remain nameless, but they only allow deposits into a PayPal account. This is not the first one I have come across.

What irritates me about this situation, is the fact that in South Africa, while I can have a PayPal account, I can use it to pay for things, but not to receive money, and I am sure that this is not the only country that has this or a similar problem.

Why do people find it so difficult to make another plan for things like this… They could either mail cheques, or simply allow a selection of virtual currency processors, such as e-gold or StormPay. Why make it so difficult for people to partner with them?

It would be simple enough to set up an international credit card, and have PayPal linked to that account, but I refuse to do it… Would I really want to work with a company that does not take my interests into account?

I think I get Niche Marketing Now

Wednesday 10 January 2007 @ 9:49 am

I found a brilliant article on the Net Business Blog about building niche mini-sites. I have wanted to start working in this area for a while now, but all the literature I have found on it seemed very obscure, and never explained what a niche was properly. This article actually gives an example… Strange that all the other sites somehow managed to leave that out.

I have actually just discovered this blog, so I will look through it, but from what I have seen so far, it definitely belongs on my blogroll (when I set up one).

Invasive Advertising

Monday 8 January 2007 @ 9:16 am

This is partially inspired by this discussion on slashdot about the difficulties in cancelling accounts. It got me to thinking of other occasions where companies shoot themselves in the foot in their attempts to make money.

One of the more blatant examples I can think of happened a couple of months ago. My wife and were in a shopping center, and decided to get some lunch, so we walked around, to find a decent-looking restaurant. We saw one which looked good, but thought we would go there later. As we were walking past it, a waiter stepped in front of us, and asked us if we wanted to come in. We said no, and after continuing a couple of steps, another pesone, from the same restaurant tried to get us into it. We ended up going elsewhere for lunch.

Another aspect of this is adverts which insult my intelligence, or are just plain annoying… there are a couple of companies that I refuse to deal with, purely because they have annoying adverts.

I think that in the modern world, a company needs to try very hard not to care off their customers… Most of the instances where the companies money-making scheme backfires seem to happen when they do not see their customers as human beings, and fail to respect their wishes.
