Brilliant Advertising

At times, I really wish that I carried a camera with me.

This morning, I saw a brilliant piece of advertising, while stuck in rush hour traffic.

While I was waiting for the car in front of me to move, I saw a scooter drivbe by me with a board saying “You don’t have to be a superhero”. It was closelly followed by another one, whose board said “To Fly through traffic…” The third and final one complted the message, with the Vespa Symbol on the back.

I normally do not notice advertising, but this was brilliantly targeted, since only people actually stuck in traffic would notice it, and the the ease with which the Scooters moved through the traffic nicelly highlighted the message.

It’s always interesting when advertising can take a more dynamic approach. Especially when practically everyone who sees it is a part of the target audience.
Anyways, I bet the scooter job is more fun than the job of standing on the street corner with a costume and a sign.

ads are everywhere these days …

coatedNovember 2nd, 2007 at 7:08 pm

I agree with the earlier comment that ads are everywhere nowadays.

The key is to find a way to stand out from the crowd and be noticed rather then just follow the crowd.

Obviously this subtle form of advertising worked as it got you talking and was memorable.

Dan AntonNovember 5th, 2007 at 11:48 pm

hehe that is pretty smart, and very targeted as you pointed out. Did you see the advertising campaign by adidas I think it was, where real life guys were playing soccer on a billboard? Some pretty clever ways to get your product noticed.

A perfect example of a brilliant advertising campaign.

What city was this in? Definitely some interesting advertising going on!

Brilliant way of advertising and great way to help serve boredom while awaiting for the traffic to move. Nice idea.

JohnJanuary 14th, 2008 at 5:09 pm

An excellent idea for an ad campaign. Pretty darn smart must say..

teeth whitenerJanuary 16th, 2008 at 2:03 pm

It sounds like a great marketing idea to me!
Don’t you have a camera on your phone?

Guy CohenFebruary 4th, 2008 at 9:13 am

That’s definitely the best advertising/ marketing strategy! Having an attractive and unique idea to advertise your product could help a lot to make your product well-known to your target customer.

Shantanu BalaMarch 10th, 2008 at 1:28 am

The fact that it enticed you to get a Vespa means that is served its purpose to the corporation running the production/marketing of Vespas. But, I must say, that is brilliant targeting.

AmandaMarch 11th, 2008 at 3:17 am

Wow, I really admire creative advertising ideas. That was definately a money making concept.

NickMarch 13th, 2008 at 5:26 am

Great idea for offline advertising.. but how can we use this offline marketing strategy for our online businesses? ;)

jobMarch 13th, 2008 at 8:49 am

yeah, advertisement always put a great impact on people, especially the viewers..so it needs to be dynamic enough

MattMarch 19th, 2008 at 12:33 am

I love this type of advertising. Unfortunately it gets overlooked by most companies due to the inability to really track ROI. If only more people too chances on guerilla marketing…

JennaMarch 19th, 2008 at 7:44 pm

Interesting post. It is amazing where you see advertisements these days. Thanks for sharing.

RebeccaMarch 22nd, 2008 at 12:20 am

Yes, a camera for such moments is always a necessary thing, sometimes we can make a big profit from this.

SueMarch 26th, 2008 at 9:35 pm

I know this times. You need a camera but there is no one.

But i can imagin the picture to your story! Very creative!

InnaMarch 27th, 2008 at 2:09 pm

I would like to see such an advertisement too.

GeorgeMarch 28th, 2008 at 8:09 pm

nice story…this is a very good example for great advertising. i like it.

Computer RepairApril 2nd, 2008 at 7:52 pm

Ha, it always amazes me how some companies can come up with stuff like this. Then again for ever very creative idea like this you get 100 very stupid advertisements.

ChauncyApril 6th, 2008 at 10:25 pm

LOL, brilliant! Really wish I could have been there!

Akhmad GuntarApril 9th, 2008 at 6:39 am

You don’t have to be a superhero to fly through traffic… and what if I skip the last part of it, and make one myself.
You don’t have to spend a lot of money just to fly through traffic… Buy second hand made-in-china motorcycle, or buy a second-hand bike instead

Monica WebsterApril 9th, 2008 at 6:43 am

I would say… You don’t have to go anywhere to find yourself get cought in the traffic jam to begin with. Just stay home and watch TV

I have always wanted a vespa, they are a bit pricey though.

BuxMonitorApril 15th, 2008 at 8:33 pm

Well thats a quite interesting advertising :) i think that alot of people noticed it, because if you see one piece of text you are curious about the other – this way you are noticing the whole advertisement. Its a really good advertising strategy

Web MarketingApril 17th, 2008 at 10:05 am

Brilliant, targeted and smart = winning campaign. Although personally I can’t stand scooters, I still appreciate the marketing.

haaviApril 23rd, 2008 at 11:23 am

yes i hv seen this form of advertizing before. also i hv seen tht in ebay this kind of advertisings can be sold. Excellent post though.

JasonApril 30th, 2008 at 6:07 pm

Wow, that is a brilliant form of advertising! Something I would expect from a company like Vespa.

Jeff - Abunza GuyMay 5th, 2008 at 9:20 pm

StephenMay 7th, 2008 at 3:09 pm

Such ads are just great :)

HeidaMay 15th, 2008 at 9:13 pm

That is some really brilliant advertising. And definitely attention grabbing. Someone zipping through traffic is enough to get attention when the rest is at a stand still but to use if for advertising purposes? Whoever came up with the idea is a genius in my opinion.

We Love TrainingMay 16th, 2008 at 12:57 pm

thats an excellent idea.
wasnt a pink vespa in london by any chance was it? :) my sister drives a pink vespa in lodnon and sticks messages to it.

QaswerMay 28th, 2008 at 7:40 pm

Although i haven’t seen such advertisement(scooters) before but i have seen the similar offline advertisement. Without any doubt that is a cheap and very effective.

LiveWireJune 2nd, 2008 at 9:42 am

Haha, lovely advertising idea. As a graphic designer I try to keep an “out of the box” approach to everything I do. This is an example of an effective advertising campaign, as even someone like you, who noted you rarely even notice advertising, noticed it. Their campaign did it’s job. Interesting read, thanks for sharing.

CFI Lesson PlansJune 4th, 2008 at 10:55 pm

I love billboards like that. They really pique your interest for just a few brief seconds until you see the next one. It’s almost like adding suspense to advertising, and it’s not all that common, so I’d be it’s pretty effective.

Sammy DeOrthaJune 8th, 2008 at 9:59 am

It’s an new spin on the old ‘burma shave’ adverts of yesteryear. I wonder how the company hires the drivers and organizes the run through traffic.

If you think for a second in getting a vespa, then the advertising commits its goal.

Contemporary Area RugsJuly 23rd, 2008 at 10:41 pm

Once in a while you come across really brilliant advertising that doesn’t leave your mind. In the sea of ads, it takes extra ingenuity to stand it. I saw one saying “Traffic Tip, Don’t read billboards.” It made me laugh, and I thought it was brilliant.

MaksJuly 26th, 2008 at 12:22 pm

impNERDAugust 1st, 2008 at 10:26 pm

Wow, that is great advertising! And who better to advertise it to than people stuck in traffic? Brilliant!

Make MoneyAugust 15th, 2008 at 4:30 am

That is what advertisement is about. Leave an impression on viewer’s minds for long, while only a few achieve that goal like in your case.

Great advertising is about thinking out of the box. And this is definitely out of the box.

Dating AdviserAugust 29th, 2008 at 3:33 pm

I have always been a keen observer, and every time I go out, I can’t stop looking from side to side, hoping I will spot something cool or something interesting. And Most of the time specially during traffic congestion, Billboard advertisement get my attention because they are everywhere, but one thing that catch my interest was a car insurance billboard, It was cool because they use a real car, the drama of the billboard was, the car was hanging and nearly falling on the hill, Smile was on my face, that was a brilliant idea, and I would want to be on the advertising Industry someday.

Well that advertisement must be effective enough for you to be convinced to buy a vespa. Good job to that advertising company.

Regards
John Simon

Lol… quite a nice and unique way to advertise. In advertising, you always have to think out-of-the-box.

advertising is becoming more and more clever these days, and its fun to see the new ideas they come with. And its something they have to do aswell, because people become blind to ads after seeing so many.

Morgan CoudrayOctober 20th, 2008 at 8:15 am

That is killer marketing!!! I’d love to see a video or find out which agency came up with such a simple yet effective idea!!!!!!!

PrueOctober 29th, 2008 at 5:28 pm

nice kind of advertisement!
we, here have also somewhat the same kind of advertising strategy, but it’s kinda high-tech..
LCD monitors are put on the car’s back dashboard playing flash or movie ads..
great for places with lots of cars.

That is fantastic! I love the fun in that. I will never get a Vespa however lol

Discount Auto GlassNovember 10th, 2008 at 8:15 am

Brilliant marketing and how do I apply to be the driver of these vespas lol.

Hawaiian ShirtsNovember 12th, 2008 at 7:14 am

A very interesting approach indeed. I have a friend who sells scooters and I’ll have to tell him about this. It definitely sounds like it got your attention as it would mine.

Funny T ShirtsNovember 12th, 2008 at 11:31 pm

It is usually the cheap clever advertising that does the trick rather than a mega bucks TV advert

Buck ThompsonNovember 17th, 2008 at 10:06 am

I like your advertising very much.I have always been a keen observer, and every time I go out, I can’t stop looking from side to side, hoping I will spot something cool or something interesting in your advertising site. thank u .

That is what I call targeted ad :) very similar to the online ads platform such as Adwords and Adcenter where you can choose the location and the demographics of your ads.

That’s really cool! You must live in a large enough city where a company would choreograph something like that. I would have liked to have seen that.

are you aware you have spelled “consciousness” wrong?

padmajaJanuary 22nd, 2009 at 7:19 am

Advertisements, they rule the market and the popularity of the products, there are instances where people buy products Getting impressed seeing the ad, I think the companies spend a lot for ad campiness and making of ads.
