Jericho, Nuts and Money

I have only ever seen the first Episode of Jericho and it looked very interesting, but I was watching too many things at the time, so never followed it further, although I plan to when I have the time.

Apparently the series has not been renewed for another season, and the fans are not happy about it. In reference to events in the last broadcast episode, they have been sending nuts to CBS in an effort to get them to renew the series. (I don’t really see the logic of “Do what we want or we will give you stuff!”, but there you go).

What does this have to do with making money? Glad you asked. You see, Nuts Online has offered a discount to all the fans that want to send nuts to CBS, and at the time of this writing, they have made $17309 from this campaign, according to their site (I know nothing about the nut industry, but I am sure that they are making a nice profit). For those of you wondering, that is 12628 lbs of nuts.

I am not saying anything against Nuts Online, for all I know they might be Jericho fans, or just a company that saw a good opportunity, and acted.

The point of this is that one must be prepared to ’strike when the iron is hot’ (please don’t report me to the cliche police), and takeuse any opportunity as it comes along. I am pretty sure that Nuts Online did not include ‘nut shipping for TV show renewal’ in their business plans, but they acted when they saw masses of people needing nuts. In other words, you can never guess where a new opportunity will come from.

Will Jericho Get renewed as a result of this plan? I have no idea, but I think that it will send CBS a clear signal that the show has a passionate fan base, and the very story about the nuts will mean that more people will be exposed to the show when it comes out on DVD

Update: As one of the commenters pointed out, Nuts Online say that they are not making a profit on this, which is most likelly true, but I think that they will see a raise in profits anyway, since they have increased awareness of their brand, and got people to do an initial purchase from them.

Second Update: Jeffrey from Nuts Online took the time to comment here as well, and I am inclined to believe him. I do not think that he actually planned to use this to increase his profits, although I think it will in the long term (and he deserves it). Its a classic win-win situation: Te fans win by being able to make their displeasure with CBS know cheaply, Jeffrey wins in the long term, with increased customer base, and even CBS can win if they actually see this as an opportunity to see what their audeince really wants.

If there are any more updates, I will make them a speerate post.

Dude, just look at the nutsonline website. They are charging about $1.38 a pound for these nuts DELIVERED, I can’t find anything he sells nearly that cheap. Just one look at the page shows the amount of labor involved in delivering these, and the guy is updating his blog every hour, looks like he isn’t getting any sleep.

So whatever benefit he is gaining here, he is definitely not being greedy. Also if you read his posts he is very honest about how he got into this and what he gets out of this.

I actually did not mean to imply that they are being greedy, I am just stating that what they are doing is a sound move from a business perspective.

If their motivation is purely altruistic, they will still benefit from the exposure and an increase in the number of potential clients.

My article was not intended as a dig at nuts online (a company I have never had any dealings with, but they seem to be a fairly nice bunch of people from their site), just an analysis of the possible advantages to what they are doing from a business perspective. I apologise if I have offended anyone.

Oy, maybe now I wished I charged a little more to simply slow things down :-P , but profit is the last thing on my mind. We are going nuts over here. Yes, the publicity will probably be great for us long term, but short term, this is at best a break-even scenario for us. It’s all about the fans and Jericho right now. I wouldn’t trade that for anything. This is just amazing.

I just wanted to say that in our May 17th blog on myspace, we recommended http://www.nutsonline.com as our preferred provider for nuts. (What can we say, they looked like a good place to do business with).

So we the fans swept nutsonline into the Jericho movement, it wasn’t just some company coming along to take advantage. They have been nothing less than amazing with their support and customer service. They have thousands upon thousands of customers for life now. We thank them!

Thank you too for your article. We read through all of them (as many as we can find). We hope as the news of our movement spreads even further, more supporters and new Jericho fans will hop on board.

CBS is donating all the nuts to food banks and our soldiers. The fans are killing to birds with one stone. This is a wonderful news story and feeding many people as well.

Jeff and his people are a CLASS ACT. Check out his blog, and you’ll see, the guy never gets to sleep. He eats, breathes, and rarely sleeps for the Jericho fans. He could have just charged the regular rate and made a HEFTY profit, yet he didn’t. He delivered a lot of the nuts HIMSELF to make more of a presence and impact for us. Yes, he will benefit, because I am now a LIFETIME customer. All my Christmas edibles are purchased through nutsonline.com. But in this cynical world we need to commend people for their genuine sincerity and hard work when it is authentic. Jeff is authentic. He even took the time to email me personally, even though he is MAD busy.

Rock on Jeff. You are a warrior.
