Jericho, Nuts and Money

Posted on Thursday 24 May 2007

I have only ever seen the first Episode of Jericho and it looked very interesting, but I was watching too many things at the time, so never followed it further, although I plan to when I have the time.

Apparently the series has not been renewed for another season, and the fans are not happy about it. In reference to events in the last broadcast episode, they have been sending nuts to CBS in an effort to get them to renew the series. (I don’t really see the logic of “Do what we want or we will give you stuff!”, but there you go).

What does this have to do with making money? Glad you asked. You see, Nuts Online has offered a discount to all the fans that want to send nuts to CBS, and at the time of this writing, they have made $17309 from this campaign, according to their site (I know nothing about the nut industry, but I am sure that they are making a nice profit). For those of you wondering, that is 12628 lbs of nuts.

I am not saying anything against Nuts Online, for all I know they might be Jericho fans, or just a company that saw a good opportunity, and acted.

The point of this is that one must be prepared to ’strike when the iron is hot’ (please don’t report me to the cliche police), and takeuse any opportunity as it comes along. I am pretty sure that Nuts Online did not include ‘nut shipping for TV show renewal’ in their business plans, but they acted when they saw masses of people needing nuts. In other words, you can never guess where a new opportunity will come from.

Will Jericho Get renewed as a result of this plan? I have no idea, but I think that it will send CBS a clear signal that the show has a passionate fan base, and the very story about the nuts will mean that more people will be exposed to the show when it comes out on DVD

Update: As one of the commenters pointed out, Nuts Online say that they are not making a profit on this, which is most likelly true, but I think that they will see a raise in profits anyway, since they have increased awareness of their brand, and got people to do an initial purchase from them.

Second Update: Jeffrey from Nuts Online took the time to comment here as well, and I am inclined to believe him. I do not think that he actually planned to use this to increase his profits, although I think it will in the long term (and he deserves it). Its a classic win-win situation: Te fans win by being able to make their displeasure with CBS know cheaply, Jeffrey wins in the long term, with increased customer base, and even CBS can win if they actually see this as an opportunity to see what their audeince really wants.

If there are any more updates, I will make them a speerate post.

My Five Top Firefox Plugins

Posted on Tuesday 8 May 2007

I am writing this as part of the problogger group writing project. In truth, its something I have had in mind for a while, even befor ethe project, so without further ado, here is the list of the Firefox plugins that I find the most usefull:

  1. StumbleUpon - One of my favourite plugins. For those of you not familiar with StumbleUpon, it is a service that allows you to stumble different sites, that were added to the site by other users of the service, through a bar added to Firefox. Lots of weird and wonderful sites can be found that way,
  2. FireForm - A simple form-filler, easy to set u, and fills in most fields with a click of a button. Does require a bit of customisation to use properly.
  3. del.icio.us - I make extensive use of del.icio.us to store my bookmarks,a nd to co-ordinate between my home and work computers. This plugin makes adding bookmarks very simple for me.
  4. Rankquest SEO toolbar - A small plugin that displays various SEO information of the current page, including Alexa ranking and Google Page Rank
  5. ScribeFire - A blog editor forfirefox, I have already written a full review of Scribefire

Well, there you have it. I hope you find something useful in here.

A DS Lite Contest

Posted on Wednesday 2 May 2007

Yes, I know that I promised that I would stop with the fluff and start posting some real content, but I have a chance to get a Ninendo DS Lite, and I have wanted one for ages, so here is another contest post. (At least this one is not run by John Chow).

BobmeetsWorld.com is giving away a free Nintendo DS Lite, with some games, in celebration of his birthday in May (I always thought that people were supposed to receive birthday presents, rather than gicving stuff away.).

I have just discovered his blog, so I have yet to explore it fully, but he does have some articles about generating traffic and getting more rss subscribers.

Well, here is my entry, and Happy Birthday, Bob!
