Servage Review

What follows is a review of Servage that I had written on Webhostingunleashed:

When looking for hosting, I had a couple of criteria in mind:

1. Rails support - Although I am not using Rails, I would need it for some future projects. Servage provides full rails support, although I have not tested it yet.

2. Multiple domain hosting - Servage allows unlimited domains on a single hosting plan. I have about 7 domains hosted with a single plan, and have never had any problems

3. Uptime - Servage has come through on this one. In the three months that I have been with them, my site has not been down at all.

4. Bandwidth - Servage’s plan offers 2.1 Terrabytes of bandwidth a month. I ahve not pushed the limit yet, but it\s nice ti know that it is there.

5. Disk space - Servage offers 250GB disk space withy theri standard account, and I got an extra 25GB for signing through one of their affiliates. The available disk space also grows the longer you are signed up with them.

6. CPU usage - I planned to do some web development, and so needed a host that will allow me to make good use of the CPU. Servage runs on a clustered server, meaning that there should be sufficient processors to take up the slack when needed.

7. Affordability - On the yearly plan, Servage costs me $6.45 a month.

To my delight, I have found a couple of extras that Servage offers, which are very good.

Affiliate program - for everybody that signs up with my affiliate link, I get two months hosting for free.

Support - I have made use of their support a couple of times, through their web interface, and each time I received an email back within 10 minutes of posting. This is despite the fact that their contact page said that they are slow due to maintenance at the time.

Overall, I am delighted with the service I have received from Servage, and would recommend them to anyone.

Well, they’ve been having over 20 hours of downtime the last week. In fact, they’re still down right now.

If you are using mysql for database don’t use servage. I have transfered to them just this October and they are having to many problems like:

cannot connect to database etc. page not found.

There tech support replies a little quick but cannot give a good opinion to address your concern.

And usually the problem just go round and round. I spent 4 days about an issue that till the end they cannot resolved. So in the end i have to go back to my old hosting.

    Hi

Nice to hear that you don’t have problems with SERVAGE while we are having tons of them. You are right, specs and the whole system is really nice and organised but their support is the worst we ever had and RUBY ON RAILS is not at all working on SERVAGE HOSTING I guess as since 2 weeks we are communication with the support of SERVAGE to install REDMINE and TYPO and other’s like TRAC … and NONE RoR Application is working until now.
You don’t have SSH Access therefore you need the SUPPORT to assist you while installing the RoR Application. You can read all about SERVAGE HOSTING in our BLOG http://apapococ.blogspot.com/

Have you got meanwhile RoR Applications running on SERVAGE and if yes HOW did you accomplish this? Thanks for answering and a happy new year.

Do not use Servage. Wish I had read these comments before I signed up with them. Had nothing but problems with my mail servers, no emails getting through to hotmail or yahoo whether sent standard or through php.
Been continuously onto their support since the first day I signed up 7 days ago and now I know why they kept me hanging on…… they only refund within 5 days of sign up. Now my refund has been refused and they’ve kept an upfront payment for 14 months hosting!!!
Servage has not only left me out of pocket but with a list of cheesed off customers aswell. DO NOT USE SERVAGE

I’ve been with Servage.net for 3 months, as of February 2008. My sites have been innaccessible 5 times during that period. Entire sites were “unable to be found on the server. SITES, not files.

Responses to support tickets say, “We’re aware of the problem. Please be patient.”

Once I couldn’t access any sites for over 8 hours.

Whenever I have asked them what caused the problem, I get no response.

There are also frequent database connection problems.

Another negative is their 5-day money back guarantee. There is no pro-rating. Once you sign up with them, you’re stuck - unless you get smart and decide to change hosts.

    I am changing hosts.

Bottom line. Servage is a webmaster’s nightmare.

After 2 years i leaved servage.

Mysql server is going down every 10 mins.
Php script (ie. oscommerce , wikimedia, phpstats ) are very very very slow!!!

Also, in the last month, some one has cracked server. I found all my index defaced. After a little check, i found other site (not mine) on my same node, with the same defacement. I have report this problem by email and support. One day later, again the same attack, all my index are changed. I REPEAT IS NOT A PROBLEM ABOUT ONLY MY ACCOUNT, BUT ALSO OTHER ACCOUNT ON THE SAME SERVER!!

One week after this, a my friend on other servage server, has found a similar defacement (iframe with an activex) and it’s site is only in pure html.

I’m sure 100% servage has big security problems!!!

I have asked to the support many many many times informations about this ‘hack’ but no one has give to me a little and easy answer!! I asked if some my personal information was stolen, but NO ANSWER!

I warning every one with an account on server to check its page for possibile shell or hidden defacement (index.php, index.htm, index.html, login.php, auth.php and others )

Okay. To sum up what I am about to say about Servage.net; Do Not Purchase Anything From Servage.Net!!!

    Here are my reasons

    Pros

    - 510gb space 5000tb bandwith woow!
    nothing else!

    Cons

    - Bandwith And Storage Space Lie -

    - you will Not get 510gb space and 5000tb bandwith. It Is a Lie. Your account will be suspended when you reach around 20gb bandwith, WItHOUT Any NotICE!
    - Once your account is suspended, removal Will take about 4 days.
    - and once they remove the suspension on your account you Will still have problems. Like on my site, I had a huge problem with the images. Html images were not loading fully on page load. you needed to refresh the page multiple times to get the entire page view correctly.

so don’t get fooled by their overselling policy 5000tb bandwith, It Is Not True.

    - DoMAIN Name -

    - you won’t get a yourdomain.com for Ftp or for email server, it will always be servage.net

    - Incompetent Idiots At Ticket Support System -

    - First of all you won’t get a straight answer to your question at the first time you ask a question. I am repeating again, you Never get a satisfying answer at first, you have to ask in a different way!!! sometimes it takes me around 10 question before get an answer to my actual question.

    - DAtABASE -

    - At least once a Day you will get mysql database connection error! at least once a day I am REPEAtING. Now tell me how can you manage a e-commerce-like site on a server like this. imaging your client will have a mysql connection error when they click on the purchase button. Chaos!!!

    - my account sites uptime-

    - Your sites will be inaccessible at least 5-10 times a week, and you can’t do anything about it. only thing you will get from ticketing system will be moronic answers.
    you will lose customers,
you will look ridicule to your clients.

    - I only purchased for 14 months, but they kept on giving me free months, because i complained a lot. so my account will be active 3 more months. but i don’t care even if they give me 2 years for free, i am going elsewhere once it is finished!

I can keep on going here. but anyway hope you guys get the point.

    No No!
Do Yourself A Favor Do Not Choose Servage
    No No! “

  11. dude - May 19th, 2008 at 9:29 pm

Well, their support system is awesome they reply fast enough when your question is general and not too technical or related to a real issue!

I have been with them for a few months and I am totally unsatisfied since my site has been unaccessible / down about 8 times or so. The down time is short but still I DON’T LIKE IT NEITHER DO VISITORS. Sometimes I get 404 my site URL is not hosted on this server etc of crap. And when I ask about it they say “We are aware of your problem, system administrator is on it” then I know they BS all the time and my problem appears again and again.

I got many MYSQL problems too like connection lost and supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource.

Although I liked servage pretty much at the begging, now I am starting to regret at I purchased their service and I am seriously thinking about changing host if they don’t fix this crap in the next few days…

my site www.neeshu.com is hosted on servage right now I am getting

Could not connect to the database server

error damn problem with servage i thought i could get some great uptime during high traffic period

  13. kuk - June 27th, 2008 at 11:42 am

I am customer of servage since three years.

You couldnot get good availability the whole time, but last couple months I got more and more 404 error on all domains.

    But not only this:
end of May 2008 I got a message from Servage, that I have to change the passwords for all FTP accounts. I did this, but many sites were already defaced through a .htaccess file. I guess the passwords were stolen from the database of servage, because I found the .htaccess files only in the folders, which were provided through FTP.

Three weeks later I got a bill for my credit card, where someone bought something in New York for 1380 Dollar on 24th May. I guess that not only FTP passwords, but the credit data too were stolen.

So don’t let servage store your credit card data, because servage is not secure enough.
