I found an article about how the mozilla foundation actually makes money from their software (including my favourite browser, FireFox) (from JohnChow Dot Com)
You see that little Google search box on the upper right? If you use that box to make a search and click on one of the Google ads from the results page, Firefox gets an estimated 80% of the money. In addition to the search box, Mozilla also makes money from searches made on the Firefox start page.
I have always wondered how the various open source projects support themselves, and now I know. Now, all I have to do is make something that will become as popular as FireFox
